چکیده

Vertical-cavity surface-emitting lasers (VCSELs) are a new type of semiconductor laser that have emerged as an economical alternative to conventional edge-emitting lasers. Anisotropies within these lasers, such as birefringence and dichroism, cause their optical output to favor one of two orthogonal linear polarizations; however, other optical outputs such as elliptical polarization and polarization coexistence are possible under some circumstances. When using these lasers in real systems, optical feedback (from a fiber-optic cable or CD) is almost unavoidable. Numerical simulations suggest that under optical feedback conditions, VCSELs lose their polarization stability and descend into chaotic behavior. These complex dynamics, however, are extremely sensitive to the relaxation rates of the system, especially the so-called “spin-flip” decay rate. In addition, recent work at Mount Holyoke College suggests that extremely short external cavities can heavily influence the behavior of VCSELs. My thesis will focus on two separate investigations. In the first, I will develop a model to simulate the polarization dynamics of VCSELs in short external cavities, to complement the work that has been done at Mount Holyoke. In the second, I will experimentally investigate how VCSELs react to optical feedback in two “extreme” conditions — extremely short external cavities, and cryogenic operation.

Fast, electrically controlled polarization modulation of multimode vertical-cavity surface-emitting lasers by RF frequency modulation.

We report on a study of polarization properties of asymmetric, multimode vertical-cavity surface-emitting lasers (VCSEL) subjected to electrical RF modulation. When subjected to RF modulation, complex frequency-dependent polarization properties, especially near the polarization switching point are revealed. We propose a scheme of rapidly switching the two RF frequencies modulating the VCSEL, in...

Polarization switching control in vertical-cavity surface-emitting lasers

Orthogonal polarizations within vertical-cavity surface-emitting lasers ~VCSEL! lase at slightly different wavelengths. We describe the use of optical feedback to confine polarization variations to reproducible injection currents. An external cavity is used to select specific wavelengths that reflect back into the VCSEL, hence, changing the cavity Q for the different polarization states. With t...

Coupling of polarization and spatial degrees of freedom of highly divergent emission in broad-area square vertical-cavity surface-emitting lasers.

The polarization of highly divergent modes of broad-area square vertical-cavity surface-emitting lasers is shown to be only marginally affected by material anisotropies but determined by an interplay of the polarization properties of the Bragg cavity mirrors and of the transverse boundary conditions. This leads to a locking of the polarization direction to the boundaries and its indeterminacy f...

Bistable polarization switching in mutually coupled vertical-cavity surface-emitting lasers.

We theoretically investigate the polarization-resolved dynamics of two vertical-cavity surface-emitting semiconductor lasers that are mutually coupled through coherent optical injection. We find a sequence of bistable polarization switchings that can be induced by changing either the coupling strength or the optical propagation phase. The successive polarization switchings are correlated with t...

Observation of low-frequency fluctuations in vertical-cavity surface-emitting lasers.

Low-frequency fluctuations, which are typical irregular oscillations in edge-emitting semiconductor lasers, are experimentally observed for the y-polarization mode (y is the direction along the optical axis of a laser material) in a vertical-cavity surface-emitting laser with optical feedback.
